Compare The Ram 1500 To Competitors Ford F-150 & Chevy Silverado

The Ram 1500, Ford F-150, and Chevy Silverado are some of the most iconic and popular pickup trucks in America, and today are as common in suburban driveways as they are at the worksite or on the ranch. Each offers a seemingly endless array of configurations, with multiple trim levels and engine options. So just where do these trucks differ? Let's take a look.

Ram 1500 vs Ford F-150

Engines and Performance

The Ram 1500 features a base 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine with an eight-speed automatic, a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 that gets excellent fuel economy (28 mpg highway, per EPA ratings) and for heavy work, a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 that cranks out 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, Ford's options range from the comparable base 3.5-liter V6 to a 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that gets 26 mpg highway to a 5.0-liter V8 that makes 385 horsepower and 387 pound-feet of torque.

Suspension and Handling

The Ram 1500 has an air suspension that designed to improve ride, handling and ground clearance. With the push of a button, the cabin can be lowered for easier entry or raised to provide 10.7 inches of ground clearance. The F-150 meanwhile, features Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which lets the driver use a single knob on the dash to input left or right commands while the truck handles steering and braking.

Exterior and Interior

The Ram 1500 has a "big-rig" style that's rugged and good-looking, including a bold chrome grille, and stands out among its peers. The Ram also has lots of great storage features including under the middle of the front bench, under the rear seats and even in the pickup bed fenders. The F-150 is also a handsome truck, but more in line with Ford's overall design aesthetic. Its bed can be tricked out with loading ramps that lock into the bed walls, as well as various cleats and brackets for customizing cargo stowage. The Ram's top-of-line trim, though, includes features and cabin amenities that rival those of Chrysler's nicest luxury models.

Ram 1500 vs Chevy Silverado 1500

Comparing the Ram 1500 and the Chevy Silverado 1500

The Ram 1500 and the Chevy Silverado 1500 are two of the more evenly matched pickups on market, and both are great choices. Each one is available in such a wide range of configurations (including cab size, bed length, engine power, trim level) that it's easy to customize either of these vehicles to meet your specific needs in a truck. People tend to start driving one of the other, and wind up sticking with that brand for the long haul, unless there is some overwhelming reason to change.

All that being said, the Ram 1500 is one sweet truck, particularly if you haul or tow heavy loads, thanks to its unique coil-spring rear suspension and a choice of a gasoline V8 or a turbodiesel V6.
